Lou Davey – Consultant, Youth Services

Lou DaveyLou’s background is in teaching. Over the last 20 years she has channelled her energies into working with marginalised young people, gaining considerable experience in this field long before it was fashionable. Her experiences include teaching in a residential therapeutic community for adolescents with emotional, behavioural and mental health issues, supporting “looked after” young people, training and support to young homeless people and delivering youth theatre projects.

Over the last 5 years with the Blacon Community Trust, Lou has developed a full time alternative curriculum programme for young people excluded from mainstream schooling and gained independent school status for the BYPP (Building Young People’s Potential) Learning Centre. Retention and successful movement into Employment, Education or Training on finishing the programme have seen an enormous demand for the service which operates at capacity with a waiting list.

Other successes include intensive work with teenage parents in terms of education, support and peer mentoring – a recent highlight being a teenage parents’ conference aimed at professionals, organised, hosted and facilitated by the young mums; a construction skills programme targeting the NEET group; and a Learning & Skills Council contract to deliver tailor made programmes to young people on ISSP and YOT orders as an alternative to custody.
